Both Journalism Days will feature keynote speaker Rob Curley, executive editor of The (Spokane) Spokesman Review

After building some of the most award-winning news sites on the internet, Rob Curley has been featured on the cover of national magazines and even in an Apple commercial. Creativity Magazine named him one of the 50 Most Creative People in the World, and he is one of the only newspaper editors in the world to give “Tech Talks” to Google’s programmers on the web giant’s main campus in Silicon Valley.

Curley is a highly sought-after speaker at both journalism and civic conferences across the country because of The Spokesman-Review’s ground-breaking events series, Northwest Passages. Often drawing crowds of more than 700 people, these events have made The Spokesman-Review a national leader in community engagement, local media literacy and philanthropic-funded journalism. Nearly 28 percent of the newspaper’s newsroom payroll is now funded directly by readers, local businesses and other regional organizations.

This commitment to community and unique funding approach has led to The Spokesman-Review being the smallest newspaper in the nation with a D.C. bureau, the smallest news organization in the world to send a reporter to Ukraine, and the only newspaper in the nation to offer a paid summer high school internship program, which has now grown to ten students a year.
