Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has issued a proclamation recognizing Feb. 19-23, 2024 as Scholastic Journalism Week in the state.
The proclamation reads as follows:
WHEREAS, scholastic journalism education organizations, like the national Journalism Education Association (JEA), founded in 1924, support student journalists and advisers in Washington and nationwide; and
WHEREAS, scholastic journalism education supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, promoting professionalism, encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and fostering an atmosphere that encompasses diversity and builds unity; and
WHEREAS, Washington state scholastic journalism advisers and student journalists actively support and honor the First Amendment in their student publications; and
WHEREAS, February 19-23, 2024, has been designated Scholastic Journalism Week throughout the country to celebrate all things scholastic journalism, such as JEA and state advisers, student journalists, and publication programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Inslee, governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim February 19-23, 2024, as Scholastic Journalism Week in Washington, and I urge all people in our state to join me in this special observance.
