2022 WJEA JOURNALISM DAYS

Two separate days where student journalists—newspaper, yearbook, news broadcast—can hear from media professionals to learn what they do and why they do it. For media advisers, a chance to network, earn clock hours and learn more about local media.

Registration Deadlines

  • Wednesday, Sept. 28:  Those planning to include pre-ordered lunches with their registration must register by this date.  Lunch includes: Subway sandwich (meat or veggie), chips, fruit, cookie and bottled water.
  • Friday, Sept. 30: Last date to register with no late fee. (No pre-ordered lunches for attendees, so be sure to bring lunch from home, or walk to nearby fast food options.)
  • After Sept. 30: Late fee of $25 (per form submitted, not per person.) Please contact Kathy Schrier (wjeaexecutivedirector@gmail.com or 206-979-3234) if registering after Sept. 30.
  • NOTE: Please do not arrive as walk-ins. You will not be turned away, but there will not be name tags or other materials ready for you upon arrival!

Keynote Speaker: Zaki Hamid

Zaki Hamid leads the community engagement department at KUOW Public Radio, whose main goal to is facilitate connections between the various communities of the Puget Sound area and the content division, so that our news coverage is more holistic. A Palestinian immigrant from Jordan, Zaki’s curiosity and passion for community connections have guided him throughout his career. He previously worked as a programs director for the state’s humanities council, Humanities Washington, where he produced public programming across the state. Zaki also had a career in theatre before making the transition to Journalism and community programming. He also teaches mass media at EvCC.

A NEW OFFERING FOR THE MORE EXPERIENCED STUDENT JOURNALIST

BACKPACK JOURNALISM presented by students and staff of WSU’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication
PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED: LIMIT OF THREE STUDENTS PER SCHOOL, DUE TO SPACE AVAILABLE.
This 2-hour morning session will run from 9-11 a.m. in the WSU building across the street from EvCC where morning check-in will take place. This session will prepare more experienced student journalists to handle several journalistic tasks on their own:  Locating sources, conducting interviews, taking photos/video, writing captions and producing a story from the the field.
IMPORTANT:  This session begins a half hour earlier than the other morning sessions. If you have students who will be participating in Backpack Journalism, please make sure your group arrives early enough so they can be on time for their session.
Please send participant names to:  wjeaexecutivedirector@gmail.com. Wristbands provided at check-in will allow entry into the Backpack session.

2-2:45  Optional campus tours of EvCC and WSU

Keynote Speaker: Taylor Maggiacomo

Taylor Maggiacomo is an award-winning Graphic Editor and science illustrator working in Washington, D.C. at National Geographic where she creates engaging visual journalism and communicates complex scientific topics through infographics and data visualization. Taylor holds a graduate certificate in Natural Science Illustration from California State University, Monterey Bay, and a B.S. in Biology and minor in Art from Carnegie Mellon University. Her work has been recognized by the Society of News Design, the Malofiej Infographics World Summit, and the Society of Publication Designers.
