OUR MISSION

The Washington Journalism Education Association empowers educators and student journalists to create courageous, ethical media by providing professional training, advocating for press freedom, and championing student voice while building community among Washington schools.
We believe in a future where every student in Washington has access to strong journalism education, exercises their First Amendment rights with confidence, and uses media to shape a more informed, just, and connected world.
The WJEA is committed to…
• Provide professional support, training, & development for teachers who advise student media
• Recognize & showcase student work by providing competitions and critiques
• Monitor adherence to Washington’s Student Press Rights Law
• Provide student leadership opportunities
• Building a community of like minded people to speak truth to power
• Provide resources for advisers:
• Partnerships with professionals in the field
• Field trip opportunities
• Guest speakers
• Curriculum connections
• Connect WA state to national journalism communities
