J-Day 2023: A Day for Media Advisers and their Students: Friday, Oct. 6
Register online by Friday, Sept. 22: $13 per attendee for students of WJEA members; WJEA member advisers attend for FREE; Non-WJEA member advisers and their students: $15 per person.
Advisers may earn up to five OSPI Clock hours for the day. Cost is $4 per hour ($20 for the day.)
Besides the traditional 50-minute presentations by journalism professionals (open to all students and advisers), Journalism day has added five new 90-minute morning sessions geared to train student journalists in specific skills. Each of these sessions will be initially limited to two participants per school. If space is still available after the Sept. 22 registration deadline, WJEA will draw additional participants from a waiting list:

- Photography
- Design
- Editorial Leadership
Marcus Harrison Green is the publisher of Hinton Publishing, the founder of the South Seattle Emerald, and a columnist with the Seattle Times. Growing up in South Seattle, he experienced first-hand the impact of one-dimensional stories on marginalized communities, which taught him the value of authentic narratives. After an unfulfilling stint in the investment world during his twenties, Marcus returned to his community with a newfound purpose of telling stories with nuance, complexity, and multidimensionality with the hope of advancing social change. This led him to become a writer and found the South Seattle Emerald. An award-winning journalist, he was awarded the Seattle Human Rights Commissions’ Individual Human Rights Leader Award for 2020, and named the inaugural James Baldwin Fellow by the Northwest African American Museum in 2022.

- 9:15-10:05: Session 1: Choose from a range of topics presented by journalism professionals or one of five training sessions for those pre-registered
- 10:05-10:10: Break
- 10:10-11:10: Session 2: Like Session 1
- 11:10-noon: Lunch Pre-ordered SUBWAY lunch or own lunch from home
- 12:10-12:30: Presentation of WJEA Emerald Awards
- 12:30-1:15: Keynote Speaker
- 1:30-2:15 Campus Tours, EvCC and WSU Everett
- 1:30-2:15 Informational session: WJEA and CTSO program requirements
