Two Teachers Receive Top Honors

Once a year, the Dow Jones News Fund honors journalism teachers with awards for outstanding work in the profession. Washington state has two stand outs  who won this year.

Dave Riggs, teacher at Wenatchee High School was one of four teachers in the nation recognized as a ‘Distinguished Adviser.’ Riggs worked as a professional journalist at the Wenatchee World newspaper before becoming a journalism teacher at Wenatchee High School four years ago. He advises The Apple Leaf (http://whsappleleaf.com/) and teaches journalism. Riggs is also the treasurer for the Washington Journalism Education Association. This award comes with a $500 scholarship for a student journalist.

The Dow Jones News Fund also gives a ‘Special Recognition’ award to teachers making an impact in their school community. Teresa Scribner, herself a 17 year veteran journalist at the Seattle Times and other newspapers, teaches and advises at Cleveland High School in Seattle. Scribner advises the student newspaper, The Cleveland Journal as well as yearbook and teaches classes on broadcast and  multimedia. Scribner is the current Washington State Adviser of the Year.
