Congratulations to all of the student media staffs and individual students from Washington state who took awards at the National High School Journalism Convention in Los Angeles.

The Ballard Talisman took first place in the Best of Show competition for newspaper tabloid of 17 or more pages — and who did that newspaper just edge out? Inglemoor’s Nordic News. “The top two were very close,” the judges wrote. Inglemoor took second, and Timberline’s Blazer placed ninth.

Hanford’s Altitude placed third for newspaper tabloid of 16 or fewer pages, and Mountlake Terrace’s Hawkeye placed eighth for newspaper special edition. See the full winners list here.

Ballard Talisman staffers submitted their most recent issue, which focused on teenagers and mental health.

And dozens of Washington students earned individual awards in the JEA Write-Off Contests. See all the winners here.

More than 3,000 students representing hundreds of school newspapers and yearbooks nationwide attended the convention in mid-April.
